Law Day 2019 was held May 1, 2019. This year’s theme “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society” was received well by both students and presenters—response by the schools requesting the presentation was at the highest rate in years. Fifty volunteer judges and attorneys presented on the topic to over 1500 students in all nine Lincoln public high schools and focus programs. The theme covered some of the very basic tenants of First Amendment Law and some of the limitations of both the rights of the students and the power of the government to infringe upon those rights.
An opening ceremony was also held at Lincoln High School, and the highlight of the opening ceremony were remarks by Chief Justice Michael Heavican. The event could not be possible without the commitment of the Law Day Committee and the willingness of the volunteers to step forward and provide that hour of their day to further the celebration of the rule of law.
